An extra 10 min added to the final episode of GoT Season 03! Can you believe you made it this far and can you believe you actually survived the Red Wedding? Wow, I still do not know how to recover from that episode. The season finale was pretty good though -
It starts where we left off - the Red Wedding at the Twins. The Northmen being slaughtered, the Winterfell flag being burned. So sad! The worst of it was seeing Robb's body paraded on a horse with Grey Wind's head over him and not only that, in front of Arya as the Hound rode away on the horse with the Freys flag. I am thinking at this point, geesh, what a gruesome way to start the season finale!
Then we are back in King's Landing with Tyrion walking Sansa and devising ways to make their lives less comfortable - it was nice to see this light exchange after the first few min reminding us of the brutality and gruesomeness of the Red Wedding. And of course Sansa reminiscing of how Arya would pull that prank on her (putting dung in her sheets)!
Tyrion called to the council meeting and see Joffrey's delight and asked "killed a few puppies today?" I thought that was quite funny -how I miss Tyrion's quips! This was quite an interesting exchange of who's really in power - Tyrion telling Joffrey that Sansa is no longer his to torment, "kings are dropping like flies", Joffrey getting huffed up and threatened Tyrion, challenging his grandfather Tywin and everyone in the room that he is king and he can do whatever he wants. Tywin of course, showing he has the true power says the king is tired, dismisses Joffrey and everyone else except for Tyrion. Tyrion figured out it was Tywin who pulled the strings of the Red Wedding and Tywin explain that his actions were morally just. This exchange ends of course with him crushing Tyrion regarding his birth - all for the family name.
I love seeing Bran and group and how they made it to the Nightfort, one of the abandoned forts of the Nightwatch and eventually meeting Sam and Gilly! Sam was happy to meet Bran recognizing him as Jon's brother. The excited exchange did not last when Bran said he needs help to go north of the wall. Sam will have to show Bran and group how to do so.
Not fond of the Roose Bolton and Frey exchange (which did not happen in the books but it might as well have happened) since the exchange reveals why and how they betrayed Robb and it's so evil! But Roose reveals how Winterfell was recaptured from the Ironborn by his bastard which cuts to:
the Boy! Revealed as Ramsay Snow! Theon - man, like Winterfell seen in ruins throughout season 03 opening credits, have we sen Theon all tortured. Was it cut off after all? At first I thought no, since Ramsay was eating a sausage in front of Theon and said he was not a savage. But later on we see his missing part was sent to his father Balon.
This introduces Theon as Reek but I have to mention here Yara- wow! Way to go big sister! Though Balon did not care what happened to Theon because he disobeyed orders, Yara was willing to go against the Dreadfort with 50 best Ironman fighters to rescue her "little brother"! Yay Yara! You go girl!
Bran and group departs from Sam and Gilly after Sam showed them how to go north beyond the Wall and even arms them with dragon glass!! He tells them the glass is able to kill the Whitewalkers and it was neat to see Sam being so modest when Meera asked him how he know -he said he killed one with the dragon glass.
There is a sweet Davos and Gendry exchange of them coming from the same place from Flea Bottom and the nobility vs commoner which transitions to Shae and Varys also speaking in that same theme. Interesting to see Varys trying to protect Tyrion by bribing Shae to leave Tyrion and start a new life outside of King's Landing.
There is also another sweet exchange between Tyrion and Cersei where Cersei here almost being vulnerable and a little bit more decent seems to bear her soul to Tyrion. She advised him to make Sansa happy by giving her a child - she shares how her children kept her from suicide even with her first child Joffrey.
I really like this scene of Arya playing the innocent girl when she overheard some Frey soldiers talking in detail of the Red Wedding with one guy boasting how he was part of the group that tied the direwolf's head to Robb's body. Arya stabbed that boaster after he tried to pick up the coin Arya offered for their food - Jaqen's coin of course! The Hound killed the other 3 men that were there. When asked if this was the first man she killed, Arya answered yes, and in a sense, she is telling the truth! I just love how she said she stole the knife from the Hound when the Hound asked where she got the knife! Valar Morghulis!
Yes, we see a little Jon Snow and Ygritte exchange, Jon apologizing and saying he loves her. Ygritte of course responded by shooting him with an arrow 3x, w.o missing! Jon barely escapes with his life!
Sam and Gilly withe Maester Aemon - so happy to see Maester Aemon again! Did we even see him at all in 2nd season!? It seems so long ago! But Maester Aemon allowed Gilly to stay as a guest as well as intructed Sam to write letters and send to lords and kings of Westeros of the white walkers.
One of those letters reached Davos who later showed it to Stannis. But this was after he smuggled Gendry out of Dragonstone. Way to go Davos! Stannis sentenced Davos to death but Melisandre agrees with Davos that the White Walkers pose to be a greater threat at this moment than the usurpers.
We see Jon finally arriving 'home' at the Night Watch, Castle Black! OOh so good to see familiar faces again-to see Pip and Sam and Jon reunite!
Another reunion takes place- this time with Jaime and Cersei - Jaime finally reached King's Landing with Brienne! Cersei sees the missing hand...
Finally the episode ends as it seems to always do with Dany! We see Dany standing in front of Yunkai with her advisors, her army, her dragons. Jorah tells her that she didn't conquer them but liberated them. The slaves begin pouring out of Yunkai and she gave the freedom speech. They call her 'Mysa', the episode's title which mean in Ghiscari, "Mother". She walks out to them and they carry her like a rock star and chanting 'Mysa'.
Wow, a dramatic way to end the episode and the season!
What do you think of the season finale?
